The signwriting workshops are informal day and weekend courses where you can learn a variety of practical skills in a small group. They are designed to suit all ability levels, and aim to introduce the craft of signwriting, beginning with the equipment and approaches to drawing and painting letters, in a friendly, fun and creative atmosphere.
The emphasis is on developing freehand brush skills, based on my own experience as a traditional signwriter in the west of Ireland for over thirty years. Following a short demonstration, we will begin by learning the one-stroke block letter, before moving on to script or Roman letters, with the aim of producing your own sign by the end of the day.
The longer courses also explore areas such as layout, colour, shading, lining, glass painting, gilding and other decorative effects.
Class sizes are kept small to ensure one to one tuition, and to make the workshops a more personal experience. While most workshops focus on producing individual work, workshops can also be built around creating a collective project, especially for community groups, schools or businesses.
“Great workshop and excellent insight into the skills and craft of this venerable trade under the guidance of a real signwriter”
The workshops are intense and hands-on, using oil-based enamel paints, and you will get dirty. Please wear old clothes or bring an apron, along with shoes that can (and will!) get paint on them. While protective gloves and appropriate skin cleaners will be supplied, if you have any medical issues that might be affected by working with paint or solvents, please let me know. All materials, paints, palettes, brushes, etc., along with tea and coffee, will be provided.
